Summary:
This presentation will cover the administration, scoring, and interpretation of the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS). Participants will learn the developmental progression of social engagement, how to analyze a child and caregiver’s capacities in this domain, and how to begin to work toward enhancement of social engagement. Lucy Jane Miller will join Michele Parkins to discuss how the subtypes of Sensory Processing Disorder impact social interaction based on observations and scores of the FEAS.Participants will view video examples and have the opportunity to score and document observations during a sample administration of the FEAS. They will thenhave the opportunity to compare their observations and interpretations to those of the presenters.

Presenter:
Michele Parkins MS, OTR specializes in working with children with autism and sensory processing disorder. She is DIR® and SIPT certified with advanced training in visual spatial capacities. She has completed a fellowship with Dr. Lucy Jane Miller in the STAR model of Sensory Integration. She is the co-founder of Connect Experience Write ®, a developmental handwriting program using music and movement to teach pre-writing skills and letter formation. Michele is an Assistant Faculty member of the Profectum Academy educating therapists and professionals on the DIR®-FCD model. She started her therapy career providing consultation to public school districts on infusing sensory integration, visual spatial, and DIR® principles throughout daily activities and curricula. She continues to use these strategies and techniques in treatment to enhance engagement and learning for all of her clients at her private practice in New Jersey.
Learning objectives:
As a result of this session participant will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS) to accurately administer and score assessments in alignment with evidence-based occupational therapy practice.
- Analyze and interpret the six Functional Emotional Developmental Levels (FEDLs) toidentify strengths and challenges in caregiver–child interactions.
- Examine the influence of Sensory Processing Disorder subtypes on social-emotional development and participation within natural contexts.
- Develop occupation-based intervention strategies that integrate FEAS findings to enhance social participation and family engagement.
