Presenters:
Sarah Norris, MS, OTR/L received her Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of South Alabama. She and Carrie Einck have worked together to develop the adolescent and adult treatment program at the STAR Institute for SPD. Sarah has extensive training and knowledge in evaluation and treatment of SPD throughout the lifespan. She is constantly learning and expanding her practice through reading, reflective supervision, advanced training, and working with clients, families, and other professionals. Prior to coming to STAR, Sarah worked as an occupational therapist treating diverse populations in outpatient pediatric clinics, schools, and inpatient pediatric hospital settings. Sarah also has prior experience in leadership, education, and program development roles.
Carrie Einck, MS, OTR/L graduated with her Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse. She has extensive knowledge and training in Sensory Processing Disorder treatment and evaluation throughout the lifespan with participation in the Level 1 Mentorship program with the STAR Institute for SPD and the SIPT Certification program. Before joining the STAR team, she worked in both the outpatient pediatric clinic setting and school settings in Chicago and volunteered abroad as an OT in order to further her understanding of occupational therapy from a global perspective.
Course 1 Title: Do I Have Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?
Course 1 Summary: Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR, Carrie Einck, MS, OTR/L, and Sarah Norris, MS, OTR/L of the STAR Institute for SPD provide an overview of the symptoms and subtypes of SPD across the lifespan. An overview of the history, current research, and common diagnoses associated with SPD is included. Client participants reflect on their journeys toward diagnosis, understanding SPD, and self-advocacy.
Course 1 Learning Objectives:
1. Describe Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) subtypes, history, and prevalence throughout the lifespan
2. Identify common diagnoses that are often associated with SPD
3. Learn about the research supporting SPD in children, teenagers, and adults

Course 2 Title: The Body-Mind Connection: Listening to Your Senses
Course 2 Summary:Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR, Carrie Einck, MS, OTR/L, and Sarah Norris, MS, OTR/L of the STAR Institute for SPD discuss the challenges of reading and understanding body cues. They provide an overview of arousal regulation, neuroanatomy, and properties of alerting, calming, and organizing sensations. A sample of self-regulation analogies, tools, and strategies are provided.
Course 2 Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of the body-mind connection
2. Learn what arousal regulation means
3. Begin to learn the properties of alerting, calming, and organizing sensations within your own body

Course 3 Title: Creating a Sensory Safe Space
Course 3 Summary:Carrie Einck, MS, OTR/L, and Sarah Norris, MS, OTR/L of the STAR Institute for SPD introduce the concept of a sensory safe space. They lead a discussion with client participants on the importance of establishing spaces for adults with SPD to feel safe and comfortable. The concept of “sensory snacks” is discussed and an example is provided. This course includes worksheets and discussion for identifying sensory preferences and planning out a sensory safe space.
Course 3 Learning Objectives:
1. Define a sensory safe space
2. Locate potential locations for developing a sensory safe space
3. Learn how to build a sensory safe space within your own life

Course 4 Title: Stress Management in SPD
Course 4 Summary:Carrie Einck, MS, OTR/L, and Sarah Norris, MS, OTR/L of the STAR Institute for SPD lead a discussion with client participants about the importance of managing stress within managing symptoms of SPD. Worksheets and discussion around choosing supportive exercise, relaxation, social leisure, and sleep preparation activities is included.
Course 4 Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the importance of managing stress within managing symptoms of SPD
2. Explore how exercise, relaxation, social leisure, and sleep preparation strategies support management of sensory-based challenges
3. Understand how simple adaptations daily routines and activities can make them more meaningful

Course 5 Title: Finding a Career in Your Sensory World
Course 5 Summary:Dr. Roianne Ahn, PsyD,Carrie Einck, MS, OTR/L, and Sarah Norris, MS, OTR/L of the STAR Institute for SPD lead a discussion with client participants about how we can reframe the way we consider careers and jobs. The sensory properties of various environments, tasks, work relationships, and office cultures is discussed. Worksheets and discussion around selecting supportive and ideal aspects of work situations is provided.
Course 5 Learning Objectives:
1. Identify supportive qualities within a job that can support individual sensory needs
2. Identify environments, tasks, work relationships, and office cultures that meet an individual’s sensory preferences and needs
