This
workshop will explore stimming and play related to movement, processing, and
self-expression. Riah will discuss and explore types of play, how stimming
relates to play, playfulness, and joy. We will also look at the range of
stimming from fun to harmful and the impact of stress. The workshop will
include personal reflective exercises and close with real-life takeaways.
Participants will gain an understanding of why autistic play is important and
how it supports development of sense of self.

Learning Objectives:
The objective of Play, Stimming and Sensory Processing is to provide participants with an understanding of play and stimming.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the importance of play
- Distinguish different kinds of play
- Describe Exposure Anxiety
- Define “stimming” and how it is related to sensory needs
- Explain how stress and stimming are connected
- Become familiar with the concept of sensory lifestyles
Presenter:
Mariah received
their official autism diagnosis at the age of 25, in July 2019. They are an
aspiring dance movement therapist, intending to help people to heal and develop
through movement, and help to understand the significance of stimming.
Currently, they create an accessibility conscious curriculum for their dance/creative
movement students. Mariah is still on the recovery end of burnout & is
exploring how they can be of use to communities again. Last year, they put on
their first "autistic space" event called Express Unbound and is
looking forward to continuing creating autistic lead accessible social spaces
in the future.
