This will be presented live via webinar on August 2, 2022 and a recording will be available for later access through STAR Institute's Online Learning site. Please register to access the recorded version of the live webinar, even if you are not able to attend live.
Communication through spelling is a form of assistive technology that teaches the motor skills to point to letters to spell as a form of reliable communication. Seems easy enough! However, movement is a complex sequence of steps that can make it difficult for those with sensory and motor differences to communicate and interact with others. How can we better support them for communication, safety, and independence? As a two-part series, Mastering Motor Skills for Communication: Part 1 will provide an overview of communication through spelling and discuss the complexity of movement control from the perspective of nonspeaking, unreliably speaking and minimally speaking individuals. Part 2 of the webinar series (September 2022) will build on the first webinar by providing practical ways to build motor skills for clients with the focus on the brain/body connection, coaching the body, and presuming competence.

- State the difference between motor & cognitive skills, speech & language, and the terms “nonspeaking” versus “nonverbal”
- Explain the sensory-motor feedback loop and the breakdown of
this loop as it relates to individuals with sensory and motor differences
